PHP Has No Culture of Testing - Sebastian Bergmann

Posted on Friday 29 February 2008

Charles Nutter, a Sun engineer who has worked on the JRuby project, commented on PHP in a panel discussion at Sun’s CommunityOne conference.

I will not join the “PHP vs. Ruby on Rails” “discussion” here, as the comparison of a programming language to a web application framework for another language does not make sense, IMHO. Instead, I would like to comment on two of Charles Nutter’s points.

“With PHP, everyone has his or her own way of doing applications.”

I think it is a good thing that the PHP community has a rich offering of framework solutions to choose from.

Although it looks like everyone and their mother is standardizing their PHP-based web application development using the Zend Framework, other component libraries such as the eZ Components and web application frameworks inspired by Ruby on Rails such as Symfony or CakePHP are thriving.

How to be a better programmer - Part 1 - nick halstead

Posted on Friday 29 February 2008

I thought I would re-start my blogging (apologies for the major lapse!) endeavors by covering how to become a better programmer. This will be split into a number of parts as there is a lot to cover! The first part is me feelings about ‘How to be open’ - this covers a range of things but is really about a programmers attitude. I would love to hear back if you feel you are a ‘open’ programmer or not.

How to be Open

In my very first programming job at a games company I was most definitely what I would term a ‘complete git’. Totally arrogant about my abilities and not very receptive to others opinions or new ways of doing things.

Book Review: The PEAR Installer Manifesto - Ken Guest

Posted on Friday 29 February 2008

Book Review: The PEAR Installer Manifesto by Gregory Beaver - Packt Publishing.

When I was asked by a Packt representative if I would review the book “SOA Approach to Integration” by Poornachandra Sarang, Frank Jennings, Matjaz Juric and Ramesh Loganathan I was told I could pick a book of my choice as a “thank-you” for writing that review.

I jumped at the chance to obtain a copy of “The PEAR Installer Manifesto” - and have now been asked to write a review of it, so here goes:

The book is approximately 270 pages long, split into six chapters, and is aimed at PHP developers who “want to understand how the PEAR Installer works and what it can do for them” and also for those “seeking a better way to deploy their applications and manage updates”.

Links Vs. Content: Which Is More Important

Links Vs. Content: Which Is More ImportantWriting by Nick Stamoulis on Wednesday, 26 of March , 2008 at 1:03 pm

An article SiteProNews got my attention when I read a headline about the best 3 - count ‘em, three! - SEO tips for this year. Here’s what the author suggested:

Subscribe to Google AlertsSearch Engine Optimize your 404 pageBuild links - seriously

Notice he didn’t say “optimize your content.” I wonder why.

Seriously, everyone serious about search engine optimization knows that optimizing your content is important, but can you over-optimize? Can you under-optimize it? Can you optimize it optimally?

Elizabeth Smith’s Blog: The Great Compile Project

Posted on Thursday 28 February 2008

Elizabeth Smith has set out on something she calls the Great Compile Project - her effort to get all dependencies for PHP and PECL compiled on (at the least) Visual Studio 2005 transparently and provided openly.

Anyone crazy enough to help out is more than welcome. I’m currently working on the GTK dependency stack, which will hit quite a few PHP dependencies and PECL extension dependencies in the process. And yes I’d love to submit my hacks/fixes upstream, if someone could find me some information (where do you send libiconv patches?)

Her post mentions some of the things she’s already been working on to help further the cause - compiling various Open Source libraries, figuring out issues surrounding MiniGW and some examples of more complex dependency issues she’s come across.
