I’m not going to write a whole lot about this, but Neal Ford’s main takeaway point was that the future of programming is dynamically typed languages running on virtual machines - things like JRuby running on the JVM or IronPython on .NET. I’m putting those examples in his mouth, so to speak - he didn’t use those specific examples, but that’s what I took away. Dynamic languages are big for Neal, working at Thoughtworks, a big Ruby shop. I’ve mostly been in the ‘dynamic language’ world anyway, so it doesn’t seem like that big of a shift to me. Moving from PHP in to Groovy is sort of a no brainer, in a way, because the dynamic goodness is still there, but you get some of the ecosystem benefits of the Java world.

Here are some updates from my personal PHP-world from January of 2008.
Writing tests
Tests are hip, tests are cool. Lately everyone does it. So I looked at phpUnit and phpt. So far phpt wins for simplicity, though I am sure phpUnit has its use cases as well (and there is this awesome tool called phpUndercontrol puts all your tests, docs and CruiseControl into shiny graphs). But for now I am sticking to phpt to cover some packages with tests. For a dead-simple entry to the phpt-world, check this: http://qa.php.net/write-test.php
For starters I will write a test with phpt for Net_CheckIP2; and see how that works out.

Gergely Hodicska has started a mini-series of posts centering about what’s going to be coming in the next major release of PHP, version 5.3. The first article has been posted today focusing on one of the more popular topics - namespaces.
In my previous post I mentioned that PHP 5.3 will be released in early 2008 so I think it’s just in time to talk about the features of this version. […] The big gun features are namespaces, late static binding and mysqlnd, but there are other interesting improvements, for example __callStatic, dynamic static calls. In this part of this series we are going to analyze namespaces in detail.

One thing that really amazes me about the Internet is the level of value it’s brought to information. Just look at Google: one of the most recognizable and powerful companies in the world. Based on what? Possession and leveraging of information. It’s an information economy, and the more information you have, the more leverage […]

While watching Everaldo work on the upcoming Midgard C# bindings, I decided to try running Midgard 2 with lighttpd. After quite a lot of struggling to get latest SVN checkout to compile on my mac, and some playing with lighty rewrite rules, I was greeted with a working MidCOM 3 page:
So, after such a long time, Midgard 2 is finally a running system without any legacy dependencies, independent of HTTP server module or a specific database engine. Things will be even more interesting as we will really start using Python, PHP and mono bindings together using D-Bus.

Is Yahoo!s Destiny ‘Inevitable’?Writing by Nick Stamoulis on Tuesday, 11 of March , 2008 at 7:22 am
Rupert Murdoch isn’t interested in Yahoo! To Screenwerk, that means Yahoo! is destined to become a part of Microsoft:
This probably means that they couldn’t make the numbers work. And it also means AOL is really all that’s left for Yahoo! — and that’s doubtful for several reasons. A Microsoft acquisition now has the feeling of inevitability.
While I would say that this certainly makes the Microsoft acquisition of Yahoo! more likely, I don’t think it’s inevitable. It really depends on how much Yahoo! execs decide to dig in their heels. If Yahoo! is in massive debt then that would make the Microsoft deal a lot more attractive to the shareholders. On the other hand, if the shareholders see profit potential that others are overlooking then they may decide to weather turbulent waters on their own. At any rate, it will be interesting to see how the Microsoft-Yahoo! saga ends.
