on Relaxing - Ligaya Turmelle

Posted on Saturday 30 June 2007

I have to admit to not writing much lately on the blog - mostly because I haven’t been doing anything interesting. Visiting family, making new friends, catching up on my personal reading (no tech books - well ok only a few - Mostly High Performance MySQL with a dash of Flex 2), relaxing from the move and the craziness of the last year… basically trying to feel human again rather then a wound up ball of stress that is ready to explode - Man have I needed this break. This has got to be the longest stretch I have ever done where I intentionally tried to stay away from the computer and anything related to work to regain my personal internal balance. And it has been much more difficult then I thought it would be (still ended up doing stuff for PHPWomen and going to PHP User Group meetings… ). Wonder if I fulfill the definition of a junky.

C7Y: Reflections on Designing an IRC Bot in PHP, Part 2

Posted on Saturday 30 June 2007

Matthew Turland notes that the second part of his “IRC Bots in PHP” series of articles has been posted to the C7Y community site (from php|architect).

The precursor to this article introduced some background and an overview of the design for the Phergie project as an example of the concepts involved in a PHP IRC bot implementation. This article will go further into the topic of plugins including descriptions of those that are commonly needed to make a bot fully functional as well as the commonly needed core features to support plugin development.

In part one he set up some of the foundation code and explained some of the thought behind the structure of the bot. In this part he gets more into the heart of the bot, showing how to define functions for common IRC actions (join/part/ping/etc) and how he made a plugin system to handle custom actions. He also mentions topics like memory usage, data storage methods and some of the “niceties” he included.

Posted on Saturday 30 June 2007

Time has come back around for the 2008-2009 PEAR group elections and David Coallier has posted some details about this year’s elections.

It is now this time of the year again where the PEAR Group throws in the PEAR Group Nominations. The nominated people will then be called for votes by the community and 7 lucky (even though luck has nothing to do with it) will be elected as the new PEAR Group member for the year 2008-2009.

The entire PHP community is requested to nominate who they think would make the best addition to the group, regardless of how they’re related to the PEAR project. Nominations should be sent to (more…)

An Example Zend Framework Blog Application - Part 5: Creating Models with Zend_Db and adding an Administration Module - Pdraic Brady

Posted on Saturday 30 June 2007

Today’s entry adds a few more layers to our slowly growing blog application. First of all I decided to add an Entries Model and Authors Model to the mix, primarily to get ready for when we can add new entries to our blog. This leads to where we can create new Entries; we add an Administration Module to the application with it’s own distinct Layout.
Previously: Part 4: Setting the Design Stage with Blueprint CSS Framework and Zend_Layout
At the end of Part 5, we’ll have Models in place and an ugly looking Administration Panel with exactly one reference to an administrative function. The ugliness is unavoidable for now
